This is the chicken and the egg question again and basically what it amounts to is if I’m an affiliate, who would listen to me? How am I going to get my message in front of them? Why would they buy from me? It’s a very good concern. It’s a valid concern, but it’s one that is usually coming or based on an underestimation of yourself. You do have a list. You might have a small list. It might not look like an e-mail auto-responder list. It might be a Twitter list. It might be a Facebook friend list. It might be some e-mail contacts that you have in Outlook. It might be your co-workers. But the point is you have a list even if it’s just five or six people and they all share your last name.

I really like this question because it comes to me quite often from people who are starting out and they can see where they want to go. You may have the expertise already but you just don’t have a product yet. You’re not quite sure how long it’ll be until you get a product out there. Meanwhile, there’s somebody else who you see as dominating your niche, as dominating your area, and what should you do about it? I’m going to give you a very specific example. When I first started talking about teleseminars, I had done about 80 to 90 teleseminars and I was about to start a program where I would teach people how to do their own teleseminars and do them in a way that would make sense and would be simple for them.

This is a fantastic question and it’s something that I argue with different people about all the time. Sometimes I even argue with myself because I think that depending on the kind of offer and what the product owner’s put in place, your answer can change. The problem that you might have with sending people straight to a sales page is that the person who is selling may not be doing a very good job of educating the visitor to the value and benefit of the purchase. So as an affiliate marketer, you can do a good job of promoting a sales page by sending traffic straight to a sales page after you have educated them on the merits and the benefits and the results that can be expected of that particular product.

A lot of people think that the number one thing you should look for is something that pays out a lot of commissions; something that is 75% commissions, 100% commissions, etcetera. But the first thing you should really do is you should look at a good converting sales page – a good converting sales page – because no matter how much traffic you send to a website, and no matter how many commissions or how big the percentage of the sale a product owner’s willing to send to you as an affiliate – if the sales letter doesn’t actually convert, then you’re wasting your energy.

Well cloaking links means that instead of using the big, long affiliate link that you’re given by a program that has question marks and numbers and equal sign and all that kind of stuff and looks like it’s an affiliate link, what you’re doing is you’re making an alternative link so it’s a little bit friendlier, maybe it doesn’t make it so obvious that you are promoting an affiliate program. I think it’s very important that you cloak your links but not for the reason that you think. It’s not so essential in my mind that you cloak your links because you want to make it look less like an affiliate link.

“I see some products have an opt-in page but when you go to confirm your e-mail and then go to the sales page there’s actually no affiliate listed on the checkout page. They seem to be stealing affiliate commissions that way.” – Oscar
Oscar to be honest with you I do not know the rules with Clickbank. I have not used them as a vendor. I have been a promoter of Clickbank products to some degree, not nearly as much as I would like to be in the future, and this is a very important concern. So you raise a very good point and I think one of the things that I would do is I would talk to the product owner and say hey, look, do you know that your system is not working properly? You know, don’t assume that they’re doing it on purpose.

That’s an excellent question; I think the biggest thing that I see people who are starting out do with affiliate marketing that is the absolute wrong thing to do is they promote way too many things at the same time. You’ve probably seen this happen and perhaps you’re guilty of it. I know I was at one point. Where you go to that person’s website and they’ve just got like 20 banner ads and everything under the sun is being promoted. And what that does is, although you might think that it’s good for you to throw a bunch of stuff out there and see which one people want, it actually distracts them, it makes people lose focus and it makes it seem like the primary reason for your website is to make affiliate sales.

I think that the first place you should look for an affiliate product to promote is actually not on the internet at all, it should be on your hard drive. The reason I say that is because on your computer is likely a product that you have purchased that you are actually using. Those are the best products for you to promote when you’re starting out because you need to be making recommendations based on things that you have credibility for. And if you’re just starting out the best thing that you’ll have credibility for are those tools and programs that you are actually using that you’re benefiting from.

Well, first of all, make sure when you want to promote someone’s product as an affiliate, you need to use the affiliate link they give you. I’m going to recommend that you use a redirect for that and we’ll talk about that in a little bit. But by using the link that they give you you’re able to get the sales tracked back to you when you make a referral. Now sometime’s you’ll make a referral of someone and they will go and see someone else’s link later on and before they buy they will actually be buying through the link of the last person that they saw recommend that product.
